One of the real hidden gems in our neighbouring Srebrenica municipality is the Roman villa on display in Skelani. This isn’t just an old ruin — it was part of a much bigger Roman settlement called Municipium Malvesiatium, an important town here from the 1st to the 4th century AD, when the Romans ruled much of this region. Archaeologists have uncovered richly decorated floor mosaics, rooms with underfloor heating, and other remains that show life was once quite sophisticated here.

Long before the Romans arrived, this land belonged to local tribes such as the Dindari, who lived and worked along the Drina. When the Roman Empire expanded into the Balkans, they absorbed these tribes into their system and built towns, roads, and villas like the one in Skelani.

Visiting the Roman villa today feels a bit like stepping back almost two thousand years — you can see the colourful mosaics and imagine the people who once lived and worked here, a place that was both a local centre of everyday life and a crossroads in the ancient world.
